  • I can't imagine going through the huge amount of effort and expense of building an off-road vehicle from the ground up and not using live axles. The reason most modern 4WDs suck for off-road use is because of their independent suspension, and you went and put independent suspension on your dedicated off-road vehicle on purpose. There's a reason that the most capable off-road vehicles (i.e., custom-built rock crawling buggies) use live axles: markedmotorsports.com/images/marked%20motorsports%20buggy.jpg It's because live axles can have far more suspension articulation than independent suspension, and because, with a live axle, when one wheel is forced up (such as when going over a big rock), the other wheel is inherently forced down like a seesaw, which keeps it in contact with the ground. Try that with independent suspension and the other wheel will just be dangling in the air, doing nothing.

    • @Aaron Leverton "Once you've driven off road in Central Australia, you get to tell me that it wasn't serious." It wasn't serious if you not only made it over the terrain in a Lada Niva but ranked it among the best. "Your problem is that you've decided you're an authority without bothering to open your mind to others' experiences." I've done no such thing, so consider your non sequitur dismissed. "The fact that you think "racing" is the only thing that can be done in the desert is the proof. Just because someone has different experience, that doesn't negate their point." Reading Deficiency Alert Since I never said any such thing, consider this reading deficiency-fueled non sequitur dismissed out of hand as well. What I _did_ say about desert racing is that it's the only type of off-roading for which independent suspension is better than live axles. "You need to come up with a better adjective than "difficult"." No, I don't. "because many terrains that look nothing like your linked photographs are difficult, they are just difficult in different ways." They aren't difficult in a way that's relevant to the topic of live axles vs. independent suspension. For example, deep mud or deep snow is difficult terrain, but the type of suspension doesn't matter for those things. In fact, one of the best vehicles for deep mud or deep snow has no active suspension at all (the Ukrainian SHERP); it has tires that allow it to float in mud, snow, or even water and "paddle" through it. Steep hills or narrow passages can be difficult too, but again, suspension type doesn't matter for those things. In other words, when the topic is live axles vs. independent suspension, the type of terrain that the word "difficult" refers to is obvious.

Your problem is that you've decided you're an authority without bothering to open your mind to others' experiences. The fact that you think "racing" is the only thing that can be done in the desert is the proof. Just because someone has different experience, that doesn't negate their point. You need to come up with a better adjective than "difficult". What you mean is "boulder" or "broken" or something similar, because many terrains that look nothing like your linked photographs are difficult, they are just difficult in different ways.

    • @Aaron Leverton "As for the seriousness of my off-roading, that's entirely your subjective opinion." No, it isn't. You ranked a Lada Niva among the best, which means you couldn't possibly be driving on terrain like this for example (nor even anything close to it): images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/S/sgp-catalog-images/region_US/myf29-4J28EV22691-Full-Image_GalleryBackground-en-US-1553484521415._RI_.jpg Again, the most capable off-road vehicles (in terms of traversing difficult terrain) have live axles, front and rear, and yes, they have relatively short wheel bases too, and they are relatively light. That's why the traditional Jeeps (military and CJ types) have long been the quintessential off-road vehicle, and why they and similar vehicles are more capable than e.g., full-size pickups with 8-foot beds. It isn't difficult to figure out what tools work best for any given activity; just look at what people use to win competitions. On the other hand, if you're into desert racing, then you'll want independent suspension. But the vehicle the guy built in this video is no desert racer, and it would handle difficult terrain better with live axles.

      MaximRecoilMaximRecoil6 күн мурун
    • @MaximRecoil SWB isn't actually as good as people think. Longer wheelbase may allow you to ground while clearing an obstacle, but it also allows you to plant your weight better when climbing an obstacle. As for the seriousness of my off-roading, that's entirely your subjective opinion. I'll admit that it was mostly rough-roading, but it wasn't all on gravel and sand. Personally, I'm not really into using one vehicle to get another vehicle to the place I can use it. It's a waste of money in fuel and space in my garage. Priorities, I suppose.

      Aaron LevertonAaron Leverton6 күн мурун
    • @Aaron Leverton "Best were the Lada and Defender." The Defender has live axles, front and rear, unless you're talking about the brand new unibody ones. If you think a Lada Niva was among the best then you weren't doing any serious off-roading. It doesn't have the ground clearance nor suspension articulation to be any good on difficult terrain. On the other hand, if the terrain isn't very difficult, it would do well simply because of its short wheelbase and light weight. Look at the comparison pictures in the second post of this thread: www.cherokeeforum.com/f59/ifs-vs-solid-axle-201670/ Which do you think can get better traction over difficult terrain? The IFS one with one wheel in the air doing nothing? In any case, the fact that all of the best off-road vehicles that are built for the most difficult terrain have live axles, trumps your anecdotes. The only type of off-roading that independent suspension is good for is high-speed (which also means the terrain isn't difficult), like prerunner trucks. "Maybe it was the locking central diff." Serious 4WDs don't have a central differential at all. The only reason for a central differential is to allow for "AWD" on pavement, i.e., it allows the front and rear wheels to turn at different speeds. Serious 4WDs simply have a transfer case, which is always "locked" when 4WD is engaged.
