Chris Davis went 0 for 54. It was the longest hitless streak in MLB history. The Baltimore Orioles slugger reached absolute rock bottom in an unforgiving sport, and the Chris Davis streak was an outcome. 0-54. It boggles the mind.

But there is a lesson to learned here. First and foremost, it deals with Statcast and expected batting average. Even though Chris Davis did in fact go 0 for 54, everything isn't quite as it seems. Statcast reveals just how unlucky he was. We'll also talk about the Shift, and how it relates to Davis's struggles. What happened to Chris Davis? You may ask. I'll do my best to answer.

In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, I'll also talk about the good aspects of this unique streak. Even though he went through the worst slump in MLB history, he had the security of the Chris Davis contract. The Orioles themselves weren't competitive. And Davis handled the whole thing with class and poise. It really is a one in a million life lesson, and I intend to showcase that.

    • Hello, could you make a video on Patrick Sandoval at the end of this season. He has had a very interesting year, he got his first start because ohtani could get the the game in time, he got the most swings and misses in a game this year and almost threw a no hitter. Could be an interesting video.

    • 1 in a million??? Well, I mean (and yes I Googled it... it wasn't hard to Google) only about 18,918 players have ever played in MLB. So I guess no other player ties or beats his record in the next 981,082 player appearances in the MLB, then yeah you're title would actually be accurate. I understand that "One in a Million" is kind of a phrase, but I mean... people usually only use it when it's even at least a little but accurate.

  • His issues imo, which is sht btw, but if anyone wanted to ask.... he had mind issues. Proper fundamentals, but he didn’t commit imo. A lot of those fat balls that out the fielders on the warning track looked like he didn’t even commit to slugging that ball out of the park. Also, he had no issues in the ground balls. He could have potentially made made some of those base runs with actual effort on the run. Rather than giving up before he was even tagged...

  • Yeah, it is very frustrating that to hit well hit line drives right into the defensive shift resulting line outs, eg right into Nunez and Torres. Without the shift, these two balls in play will be base hits without a doubt, or maybe a double. I remember back in the day when he hits 53 homers in 2013. Later in his career he has declined terribly and consequently retiring from baseball.

  • 8:44 The probability is not calculated correctly. He's trying to show the chance of all 23 batted balls not being a hit, but the multiplication is of the probabilities that the batted balls "are" a hit. The resulting 1 in 1 000 000 probability is the probability of ALL of the batted balls being a hit. You should be multiplying together (1 - xBA) for each batted ball to get probability of none of the balls being a hit. This ends up being 1 in 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 or thereabouts (if all 23 xBAs are .900), so MUCH less probable than 1 in a 1 000 000 regardless, if you multiply any 23 probabilities, you're going to get a small number. It's very unlikely that 23 very likely things all happen, as shown by the math in this video.

    Jacob MimmsJacob MimmsАй мурун
    • I was multiplying together (1 - xBA). The multiplication shown aren''t xBA, they're 1 - xBA. The probability is calculated correctly.

  • Interesting and cogent analysis as always. Have you ever thought about doing a video on the early 2010s SF Giants? They're stereotyped as this mediocre offensive team that was carried by its pitching. This could be true, but I wonder if the analytics tells a different story because they won 3 rings in 5 years with this strategy.
