  • What should we do with a 2-stroke powered cabover truck? 🤔 EDIT: We appreciate the ongoing technical discussion about low ash 40w oil being best for these engines. Interesting stuff! Maybe we'll do a follow up video on that.

  • The last battery oem in the us shutdown 5-10years ago and doubled the cost in the us and likely in canada - all new ones are made in china which is why car, truck, etc are crappy. While China can make high end stuff if youmircomanage them like apple does (and i mean hardcore miro manages the plants) their default is to cut costs everywhere and take home the difference (like buying mangers, etc) and is a nature trait of the chinese people (not blaming them, just the truth, they do it as their gov has a huge habit of screwing people and companies and that person might be jobless in a few years - so it is a get money when you can as you may have not method in the future - it is more complex but core reason is the gov).

  • The batteries are dead, starter is probably drawing a lot of current as well. Simply tow the thing, Though you still have to bleed the injection. That looked like bearing material in the oil. And sounds like it has spun a bearing.

  • A note on the batteries: Most lead acid batteries are the same. Charging systems are shit. They need to go up to 14.4v at least once a month. When charging, u can put a 60Hz ripple DC at 20A or so for like 20mins (with a variac and some diodes), this will wildly increase the current capacity (knocks some of the lead sulfate off the plates so it can go back into solution). If a battery is really dead, u can even run AC through it for a minute, then rippled DC and get it back to pretty good capacity if not good as new as long as the lead plates aren't completely disintegrated. Downside of all this is it takes some practice to get the feel right. Lead acid car batteries are pretty tough tho so u can really dump some current into them without worrying about damage. Just putting 80A DC on them for a few mins at full charge will to a treat (may be able to do this with a welder at a medium current setting). Good battery conditioning is really key to a functional battery. It's a shame charging systems are so ass. PS: don't do this with a lithium battery lol.

  • I hate to be a realist, but 'what to do with it', is take it to a scrap yard and sell it for the ew parts and un-rusted metal that can be salvaged. 42 year old vehicles that were engineered to die after far less years, are a waste of time and money. Unless someone is wealthy and wants to invest 6 figures to have a cool toy that reminds them of their youth. For anyone to BUY this truck or any other vehicle and expect to USE it, that is sad, because it will drain their bank account. Junk is junk. Every single part of the 'repaired' truck (or car) of that age will within a short time need replaced. Everything soft turns hard, everything hard turns soft, everything wears out, rusts and deteriorates. Everything. But I love your presentation. You seem like a really nice guy!

  • Before I retired in 2018 we had switched almost all of our old starters, that would give you a hernia, with new cast aluminum gear reduction starters you could carry with one hand. If only they had had them for the 45 years plus I was a heavy duty mechanic. I lost count of how many DD engines I rebuilt from a bare block and when you first start the assembly it looks like you haven't even put a dent in all the parts. I was so glad when they came out with the DDEC around 1988.

  • I won't specify the brand of oil, but my employer used multi-grade oil in Detroit two strokes for many years, the real danger to those engines were operators who got them to soak up ether and then got them to fire. At least one new piston and liner, and possibly all of the liner assemblies, would need replacing before it could be put back in service.
