  • Great comparo Tommy! They both look very capable under some quite extreme circumstances. Like the fact that Jeep has some good aftermarket protection options. Still, for under $5 Grand, the VW shines!

    • Helicopter Dad ???? Sarcasm I guess? You don't have to get butt-hurt. It's simply a matter of fact that the Touareg does more things. I almost bought the new grand cherokee, but the lack of versatility, safety ratings, and Jeeps history of killing their occupants in explosive accidents just kind of swayed me the other way. I'm not bashing you if you enjoy it, we may simply have different interests.

    • All the mods and press for the jeeps are cool, and don't get me wrong, they have the cool, classic look, but I own a Touareg because it's an all-rounder. It's just as capable as the JGC off road (even 12 years later in my case), it's just as luxurious, it's got about the same interior dimensions for utility, and it's even better than the JGC when you factor in that it can tow more and handles better when you want to spirited driving. To get that level of versatility from a JGC, you need to buy 2 jeeps, a track-hawk, and a trail hawk.

    • @Helicopter Dad I'm not a Touareg apologist at all, I've owned a Grand Cherokee and it was the worst car I've owned. Do you think Ford will be able to match the Wrangler in mod-ability?

  • The trailhawk is 10.8" stock on offroad II height so with those tires it would be 11.3" roughly. The rear is a limited slip. Great video. I just bought an 18 trailhawk. Love it. I also found a complete replacement suspension kit from Rocky Road. That would be my plan if it ever takes a poop.

  • Really, the Touareg as shown, had much more control and seemed to me, that it was more capable of a day of hard offroading without feeling like it shortened the life span of all suspension components. The jeep clearly had to have more momentum to get over the rocks and it showed when it was hopping and bouncing like a boat over waves. May have went faster through these trails but those components took so much more abuse because it lacked the traction and control to simply crawl over the terrain like the touareg did. The 17 year old touareg, IMHO, is superior to the 2018 Jeep 👍

  • I couldn't help but notice the tourage didn't air down. Would help with traction and not tear up the tracks so much. With people nowadays getting more into off-road and overland type driving we need to pay attention to track damage and what we can do to reduce it to keep them open. Much like they do down under.

      Richard's WorldRichard's World2 ай мурун
  • I honestly think that the Touareg actually did better on most of the trail. You were using less momentum and had less tire spin. The price difference between these vehicles is also a major factor. If you want skid plates... www.skid-plate.com/volkswagen-touareg-skid-plate ..... If you add AT tires and some cameras (not really an expensive upgrade) and the ORI will go up considerably.

  • Great video. However, incorrect info on the Jeep drive system, QuadraDrive II. ELSD stands for Electronic Limited Slip Differential, not Electronic LOCKING Rear Differential. Also, the QuadraDrive II ELSD on the current (2011-2020) WK2 body style is found ONLY on the rear. The front uses an open differential and and a less expensive brake-based wheel locking to distribute front power right to left and minimize (but not prevent) wheel-spin. True QuadraDrive II (rear AND front ELSD) was only found on the 2005-2010 WK series body style. Jeep claims you’ll never miss the front ELSD in 99.9% of situations, and I suppose that’s true if you mostly drive on-road and never in snow or gravel, but the reality is that it was a cost saving measure for Jeep to eliminate the front ELSD. In true traction critical situations, the WK system was absolutely superior and even in non-critical situations, the tank-like no-wheel-spin crawl capability for the WK is inspiring compared to the WK2. I’ve owned both variants in QuadraDrive II (actually owned a YR 2000 with QuadrDrive I as well) and can attest that the WK version of the QuadraDrive II was the best GC drive system ever made. My WK QDII even went to 225K miles without a single driveline issue. My current WK2 is more comfortable and has more tech toys, but will be my last Jeep GC if they don’t give it back the drive system it deserves. The air suspension is also horrible riding in Off-Road 2 - I’d never check that box again. But that’s another story.

  • Those things are so horrible at articulation (particularly the Toureg) that they’re downright dangerous. The locking rear diffs give you a false sense of confidence because without the better articulation, the rear locker allows you to get it on two wheels and teeter tottering which could cause you to flip it on its side very easily. At least with open diffs you can’t even get it in that position, even though it is better for traction that doesn’t require as much articulation.

The Jeep stuff was referred to as "E LSD" and engaged automatically which means it's really an open diff with electronic ABS intervention to act as a locking differential. They both work though they are not the same.
